PAUL HEALD

Paul Heald was born in 1936 in Port Huron, Michigan.  His career, since receiving a Master of Fine Arts degree in Painting from the University of Washington in 1963, has been steady and productive.  Except for several university faculty positions and some lengthy travels he has been a 40- year resident of the Pacific Northwest.  In the mid 1960's  he lived and painted in the San Francisco area where he had a close association with the emerging Bay Area "Funk" movement.  His animated films of the early 1970's best reflect that influence and attitude.  He has since received  wider acclaim, and it was the elegant and subtle abstractions of the 70's and 80's which brought him critical recognition as "the missing link of northwest modernist painting".  He has been associated with several of the west coast's most preeminent galleries and he is best known for his long association with Seattle's William Traver Gallery.  He is a co-founder and past president of Artech Incorporated where he continues to serve on the Board of Directors.

Heald's art is included in many public, corporate, and private collections.  In 1982 he was elected to active membership in "American Abstract Artists".  His work is included in more than forty museum collections throughout Europe and the United States.  The artist presently resides in Seattle and in Washington's Skagit Valley
